THE TRUE MEANING OF DELTA “Delta” has several meanings. Firstly, it’s a Greek letter resembling a triangle, which, coincidentally, has as many sides as there are playable ships in the game. It’s also the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet—similar to R-Type Delta, the fourth installment in the series. A triangle is also the simplest of polygons, and R-Type Delta, incidentally, was also the first game in the series to replace two-dimensional raster images (popularly known as “sprites”) with three-dimensional graphics.

PLOT The year is 2163; a severely damaged R9 Arrowhead fighter is just returning to Earth after a mission to destroy the Bydo Empire. The ship is rescued by the cruiser Croque-Monsieur and transported to an orbiting space station. A year later, astronomers in Central Asia observe mysterious objects falling from the sky, and moments later, they lose control of the orbiting Moritz-G platform. This technologically advanced installation, capable of annihilating an entire planet, descends on the city, leveling it. Although its arsenal, capable of annihilating entire planets, has not yet been activated, its advanced defense systems make it virtually impossible to approach the platform. A desperate operation begins, and the prototype R9aII Delta ship is dispatched to resolve the crisis. And so begins the R-Type Delta battle!
